  1. These are all excellent questions. I think you'll find that the second to the last question "How long does it take to execute a person?" has a rather nuanced answer. There's the ideal length of time and then there's the time that it actually takes. The US has had many botched executions that have involved both the electric chair and lethal injection. You can read about them in a BBC story that was published last year: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-28555978 . It provides more ammunition to the opponents of the death penalty.
