Answer to my last question 10

What are the decisive factors to be sentecsed to death?

I believe each crime should have the apporpriate punishment and i wanted to know what kind of factors judges do use to choose each punishment.
These are some common factors judges consider,
・whether it was the first-time to commit a crime or a it was a repeat offender.
・whether the offender was helping the main offender or if he was the main offender
・whether the offender committed the crime under personal stress or duress
・whether anyone was hurt
・the motivation
・the offenders age
However there are some cases that the sentence has a bias toward race and it is unfair.

As it is something really important what sentence the offender should get, i hope judges or people who have the right to make the choie be responsible and make sure there are no bias and o course flse accusation.

Answer to my question 8 and 9

Q8How much does it cost to execute one person to death?

According to a study in seattle, the punishment of death penalty costed $1 million more than in similar cases without it. Executing costed $3.07 million and punishment that isn't sentenced to death is $2.01 million.
"Costs of the Death Penalty",Death Penalty Infomation Center,web.2015. 23 July 2015.

I was really surprised to know that how expensive death penalty costs. I thought that life imprisonment cost more because of the money for food and other things you need to live their life in prison.

Q9How long does it take to execute one person to death?
In 2012, a death row inmate waited 178 months that is 15 years between sentencing and execution.
There are some case where it took 40 years and the one who is waiting would be in fear of when the day would come.
In some counties the date to be exectued is not told, however i think that is too cruel because they have the right to at least know when they are going to die.

answer to my last question

How often does criminal in the death row try to escape? And how many of them actually succeed?

Criminals rarely escape from prisons not even once in a year.
Much less than once a year.
Though there are various ways that they escape.
There are some cases that they succeeded though most of the time they get captured very fast.
One way is that they escape during the police transporting the criminals to other place.
Other way is that they break the grate of windows and escape or making holes in the wall.

Answer to my question 7

What is the difference between Corprol punishment and Capital punishment?

This is an simple question.
Corporal punishment is the physical punishment of people especially by hitting them.
On the other hand Capital punishment is almost the same as death penalty meaning that it is a punishment that is sentencd to death.

I believe both punishment are cruel enough, but if i were to be executed, getting the corporal punishment is much more cruel because you get the pain all the time.

the sources are from the longman dictionary.

Answer to my queston 6

Which county does the execution in public?

In a long time ago, some countries such as France, Britain, Italy, and even in Japan had public execution.
Although these country have stopped ,China had been executing in public for a long period and the photos have been revealed in the internet.

According to Amnesty International, in 2012 public executions were known to have been carried out in Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Somalia.

I was terrified to know that there were countries where such cruel death penalty punishments were being executed in public.
I cannot image how it is like to be in those countries.

Answer to my question 4 and 5

Q4.What kind of ways are there for death penalty?

Animals ex.Crushig by elephant
Back breaking
Garrote (abolished)
stoning
Hanging
Shooting
Lethal injection
electric chair
boiling
Buried alive
burning
cooking
crushing
Poisoning
Gas
Crucifixion
decapitation
etc.
These are some ways that i have found. However there are more ways as it was done a long time ago and some are abolished so it was hard to research all the methods of death penalty.
The most common way is hanging and lethal injection and eletric chair.

Q5.How many are there?
As you can see from uestion4, it is hard to tell the exact number of the methods.

Answer to my question 3

Which country was the fist to have death penalty?

When you look at the history of death penalty, the first one established was said to be in the eighteen century B.C. in the code of king Hammurabi of Babylon.
However in this time death penalty was not only done when murdering but also 25 different crimes.
Death penalty was carried out by drowning, beating, burning alive and so on. It was in the tenth centuryA.D. that hanging was usaual in Britain.
The first leagal execution in American colonies occurred in Virginia in1622.

Results of the Domestic Survey

In our group we made two surveys, International and domestic.
I made the domestic survey so i would like to analyze my results.

First of all, i would like to thank all of you who supported our research and answered to our survey. 31 people have answered to my survey and  thanks to those people, we got some interesting results.

Our first question was gender which most of them were female.
Second was the age.Although most of them were 19, the youngest was 15 and the oldest was 20.
Our third one was if they were for or against death penalty.22 out of 31 were For death penalty which was a surprise to me.
Our fourth question was which penalty should a murder deserve if you were the victim's family, imprisonment, death penalty, or a fine.
Although many people were for death penalty, there were not much difference with imprisonment and death penalty. In the comment box there were 3 comments written such as using them as a human testing.
The fifth question was should death penalty be done in all countries and this had no difference.(Yes:16 No:15)
Our sixth question was If those who didn't want death penalty to be done in all countries are you for abolishing the death penalty. It was interesting how even though many people didn't want it in every country, most of them didn't want it to be abolished.
(Yes:7 No:11)
Our next one was what is the most serious sin above and it was terrorism.
And the  most cruel way to do death penalty was using gas.
In some comments, there were drowning in the water or burying in the ground.
Our last question was are you for or against executing in public and most of them were against it.

Through this survey, I have leaned that many people were FOR the death penalty and i was quite surprised. Our group was for the death penalty at first, but as we searched about it and got to know about it, our thoughts have changed. Since there is no opportunity to know about death penalty, many people do not know about it and if they do, I'm sure many people will look it in a different point of view.
From this survey, i found out that many people really do not know about death penalty and i hope taking this survey will lead people to know and get curious about death penalty.
Thank you for those who helped our research and I've learned that taking a survey is the best way to get to know the real opinions accurate and fast.
Thank you
Mana

Answer to my question 2

Which country has the highest number of people sentenced to death?

According to the amnesty international research, the most highest number getting killed by death penalty was China.
This is not just beacuse of the number of people in China, since it is estimated that the number of the people who were executed in China was about a thousand more than that of the Sum of all country excluding China.

China, Iran, Iraq, SoudiArab, America has a high number of execution , but it is clear that China is the highest.
"死刑判決と死刑執行 アムネスティインターナショナル報告書″,Amnesty Internatonal,1April,2015, 22 July, 2015.

Answer to my question 1

How many people have died from the death penalty?

It is quite impossible to know the exact number of the people who were executed.
This is because of the policy in China where the infomation of death penalty is not revealed. It is estimated that at least 2,466 people were killed.
However, the number does not count the number in China.

I was quite shocked that the number could not be clear and that there were countries that would not reveal how many people have been executed even though it is a serious probem. The people in their country should at least know the informaton and consider the fact that there are alot of people being executed.

The number of people varies each year but in 2014 3 people were executed in Japan.

I've got the information from a site called Amnesty International, which is a NGO that supports human rights and abolishing death penalty.
And another site where it covers the data from 1945 to 2015.

"死刑廃止 - 最新の死刑統計(2014)."Amnesty International,1 April,2015, 22 July 2015.

Analyzing the results on the domestic survey

We made a two surveys in class to get more insight on what some people think about our topic. I would like to write about the results on the domestic survey.

The results showed that we received 18 answers on the survey.

Firstly, we asked the question "Do you believe in the death penalty?"
40% of the people responded to NOT supporting the death penalty, while the remaining 60% said YES.

The next question was "What is your nationality? Age? Gender? Where do you currently reside?"
More than half of the participants answered saying they were Japanese, with one British and three Japanese/American which shows that most of the people who took the survey were probably most of our friends. I was not surprised to see that most of the people who took our surveys were around the ages from 19-32.As for gender, out of 18 people only four were male and the rest all female. Two people responded that they were from the US while the rest were from Japan.

The third question was "Does execution occur in the country you are currently residing in?"
Because most of the people who answered our survey were from Japan, it was not a surprise to see that 90% of the people answered YES to this question.

Next question was "How would you rate the seriousness of the crimes?"
The crime with the most votes to being the worst was "Murder by violence." "Rape" and "Poisoning" were second in place.  "Arson" and "Bombing" were third and lastly "Theft" and "Espionage"

The fifth question was "What do you think is the most cruel form of execution?"
Two people skipped this question only leaving 16 people to answer that the most cruel form of execution was "Stoning." secondly "Gas chamber" third was "Hanging" then "Electrocution"

The next question was quite difficult. "Do you know how many people are executed in your country every year?" 60% percent answered saying that they did not know.

the seventh question was "Should criminals be informed about the data of their execution?"
3 people skipped this question so the remaining 9 answered to YES and 6 people answered to NO.
I wanted to know why some people answered to NO, which made me wish i made a "Comment" box at the end of this question.

"Would you use something that was made for a prisoner?" Was the eighth question.
It was very interesting to see that the results were half and half. 50% answered YES while 50% answered NO.

This was my first time to make a survey on a very serious topic, so at first it was hard to make the survey not seem tacky and unprofessional. In the end it was interesting to see the results and to get a general idea of what other people think on this topic. It made me want to experiment with another survey on different topics.

If you have not taken our survey yet, please feel free to!

Feedback on our NGO

We did a project where we talked / advertised about our NGO in a presentation the other day and got feedback from everyone in class.
Good Points
I was surprised to see how most of the feedback was more positive than I was expecting it to be. Because "Death Penalty" is a dark and heavy topic, I was worried that our NGO would have a scary, creep, and dark image but I was very happy to see that some people said  although it was a heavy topic they were able to understand the presentation.
One of the mail goals of our NGO is to educate people in the death penalty in order to change their minds, so I was also glad to see that the majority said they were surprised about what really goes on in the death penalty.
We received one question on the survey, whether we showed the domestic survey or not. I do believe we showed both the surveys, but it may have seemed like we did not show it because we did not cut and paste both the Japanese survey and the domestic survey on paper.
Bad points
We got 1 (1=very poor) on the last question if we went the extra mile in making a website, or a social networking site.
I do believe our NGO would have looked a lot more realistic and believable if we made our own temporary NGO site.

Thank you for the feedback!

Answer to my questions10

How does someone exactly wind up on death row?

When this question popped up in my head i was curious but also worried that this would be a hard question to do research on as each countries rules are differemt.

When i came across this site http://listverse.com/2010/08/01/10-crimes-of-men-on-death-row/, i was never so creeped out and happy for my life.
It showed that people that are put on death row are people who have either murdered or raped someone.
Death Penalty Information site also shows many synopsis and cases of people who were executed.

Answer to my question9

What is the most painful way someone is executed?

This question is almost a sequal to my other question "What forms of exection are still performed today".
As i mentioned in one of my previous posts, I wrote about how burning, boiling, stoning, and the gas chamber are still being performed throughout the world. I believe these forms of execution are the most painful because for one,
1.Burning,
In some countries, they do not only put the person on fire from a singe match, but some countries pour scorching hot water or oil down someones throat.
2. Boiling.
Boiling is another very barbaric way of execution as they do not put the prisoners to " sleep" before they dose them in hot boiling water or oil.
3.Stoning.
Stoning is a slow and painful way of execution. For the men they bury them waist deep into the ground and for women, they bury them from the neck down. If the prisoners are able to escape while they are being stoned, it is said that they may let the prisoner live. Because they put the man waist deep into the ground and the women from neck deep into the ground, it really made me thnk how sexist! Because it would be alot easier to escape from waist deep in the ground than from neck deep.

4.Gas Chamber.
This may sound like an easy way to die, but believe it or not, it is one of the painful forms of execution. A Poisonous gas usually called hydrogen cyanide, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Other forms of exection that are more brutal and extremely barbaric are also found on this site.

Answer to my question7

What countries abolished the death penalty?

Before we started this project on contraversial issues I never new that Japan still performed the death penalty so when researching what countries abolished the death penalty, I was honestly shocked to find out that Japan was not on the list. But on a brighter note, it is good to know that no more than 10 executions have taken place.

According to this site http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/abolitionist-and-retentionist-countries the countries that have abolished the death penalty since 1976 are,
Portugal, Denmark, Luxembourg,Nicaragua, Noraway, Brazil, Fiji , Paru,
France, Cape Verde,Netherlands, Cyprus, El Salvador, Argentina, Australia, Haiti, Liechtenstien, German Democratic Republic, Cambodia, New Zealand, Romania, Slovania,
Italy, Belgium, Andorra, Croatia, Czech and Slovak Federal Republic, Hungary, Ireland, Mozambique, Namibia, Sao Tome and Princip,

According to Amnesty International 99 countries have already abolished the death penalty in 2015.

And according to Death Penalty Information Center, there are 98 countries that have abolished the death penalty. As well as a total of abolatonist and practice put together are 140.

Answer to my question5

What forms of execution are still around?

I was only aware of lethal injection, gas, and the electric chair, so i was very shocked to hear that there were still some horrific forms of execution that people still carry out even today.

Because i was already looking up this topic, I decided to add in a few details to a few of the executions that still take place.

1. Lethal Injection.
In most cases 3 drugs are shot through the prisoners body through IV which are called Sodium thiopental,Pancuronium bromide, and Potassium chloride. For fear of a not being about to successfully carry out the exection due to mechanical failer, most states inject these drugs manually.

2.The electric chair.
The electric chair was first used in 1890 in NewYork.
A wet sponge is placed on the prisoners head for cunductivity and depending on the prisioners state, they adjust the volage. Usually it would be around 2000 for 15 seconds.

3.Gas Chamber.
Mostly all over America do not use this form of execution, but the 5 remaining states that still do use the gas chamber let the prisoners choose to die by lethal injection instead.
Some places in North Korea use the gas chamber to test poisonous gasses on prisoners.hydrogen cyanide is what is used in the gas chamber which a slow and painful death if you dont breath. Naturally from fear, most prisoners hold their breath which slows down the process.

4.Single person shooting

5. Firing Squad.
This form of exection is to be said as the most honorable way of being executed.

6. Hanging,
This form of exection was said to be a common way of execution in the 1850.

7. Beheading.

8.Stoning.

9.Boiling.
This is a very gruesome and painful death where the prisoner is put into boiling water or oil.
Uzbekistan is the only country today that still uses this way to execute poitical dissidents.

10.Burning.
In recent years North Korea was reported to have used this form of execution.

Answer to my question4

How many death sentences have been issued in total?

Before doing my research on this question,I made a guess as to how many deaths have been issued in totall throughout the world. I always tend to over exagerate when thinking about numbers, as I am terrible with numbers. But when I looked up on this subject I was surprised to see that my guess was not all that far off. I  guessed that there would be around 2000 sum and to my surprise, on Amnesty International it wrote that In 2014 2466 people at the least were executed which is 28% more than 2013.
Another thing which I thought was very interesting was when I was doing my reseach, was that alot of topics on Eygpt came up. I clicked on one of the links which led to a site called Todays Zamen where it wrote about how there were 529 demonstrators exacuted. Some of them were executed just for damaging public property. It made me realize the different cultures every country has. To us it may seem very extreme but to the Egyptians it may be there oridnary rule....who knows.

answer to my questions

What happens if the person who was executed and later found to be innocent?

In Japan, the Minister of Law will make an apology and if the family is still alive, government will pay for the family indemnification.

However, when the police or prosecution were hiding some evidence or were faking some evidence, the person who knew about the cheat will of course get punished.

Answer to my questions

How many cases are there where someone was told to be executed though later found innocent and was able to avoid death penalty?

There are very few cases of sentenced culprit been executed but later found innocent in the world because people will stop looking for the evidence after the criminal dead. Though there are cases for example, a different criminal accused for different crime admitted that he also did the crime that different person were accused for which the person wrongly accused is no longer alive. Cases like the title, I must say there are a lot of them because the person being accused claim that they didn't do it many times and get researched a lot.

In Japan, there haven’t been any case where the criminal were found innocent after been executed yet after the war. However, there are some cases that people in death row were found out innocent and gets released. 4 cases being released, one case now that is going to be released soon and 3 cases that looks like the criminal is innocent but were executed before being proved.

In different country, for example in China, criminals gets execution very fast. They get execution soon after being sentenced so it is very hard to find and help wrongly accused person.

answer to my questions

Can criminals avoid being executed if they pay enough money?

I searched this matter and found conclusion of Japan’s execution system. I believe this conclusion goes with every country that does execution.

However the answer is NO. I think I was so stupid to think about this matter because I could find very few information about this. I guess this is because it is so obvious that nobody bother to ask. If the criminal is “life imprisonment” criminal, there are chances for them to go outside with surveillance. However for execution, there is no exceptions.

answer to my questions

Why does it take so much time for the execution to actually take place?

In Japan, it is said in the law that death penalty has to be done in 6 months after the criminal has been sentenced, but it normally does not take place in 6 months. It takes much more time for the death penalty to actually take place and it could be postponed almost forever.

The reason why it takes so much time is that to do death penalty we need the Minister of Justice’s permission. However, the relevant department has to deal with massive amount of data about the case which the criminal is involved before the Minister give the permission. In addition, the Minister of Justice will also have to deal with the massive data for the trial. Furthermore, if the criminal asks for a retrial, they could have the trial and it does not count for the 6 months that is stated in the law. Because death penalty is a big deal, it is a matter of life and death, the criminal can ask for retrials many times. So if they keep asking for retrials, the 6 months will never come which means that deadline will never come to both the Minister of Justice and to the criminal. Death penalty can be performed during the retrials or during the criminal asking for a retrial. Although the Ministry of Justice have to be careful about giving permission so it is likely that they don’t give permission during the trial and during the criminal asking for a retrial. Death penalty takes lots of time to be actually done to make enough survey and consider the facts in order to prevent killing innocent people.

Answer to my question3

How often does the death penalty occure?

When coming up with this question i new that it was a very vaque question which has its pros and cons, pro because i can get alot of information on one topic, and con because i realized how often im going to have to cite all the sites im going to be researching on.
Because this is such a vaque question i decided to research how much it is occured in the United States just to get an estimate.
I also found this question extremely difficult to answer because of the numbers and percentage of the death row inmates by state, execution by region, as well as mental disabilities. So i decided to write about the number of death sentences per year from 1999 to the year 2014 in the United Sates. Looking at the graph you could see that the numbers slowly decrease from 226 to 73.
What i thought was the most interesting was how there were many death sentences in the year 1997 (226 ), and in the year 1998 there were 295 death sentences, but in 1999 it suddenly dropped to 279.

Answer to my Question 2

Who was the first person to die by the death penalty?

When this question first popped up in my head, i was suddenly very curious to find out who it was so researching this information was quite interesting.
On this site called Death Penalty Info, it showed that the first every death sentence was taken place way back in the 18th century B. C. He was sentenced to death for 25 differenct crimes which was taken place in in the Code of King Hammaurabi of Babylon (Iraq).
Many of the first methods of the death penalty were hanging, stoning, crucifixion, burning alive, and impalement.

I was worried that my research wasnt correct so i checked out another site called ProCon which also stated that the first death sentence took place in the Code of Hannaurabi.

Answer to my question 1

Which countries still perform the death penalty?

I have always had the image that mostly every country still use capital punishment, but I was very surprised to see on TheGaurdian, that most countries used to use capital punishment, but have recently been abolished.

The top 10 countries that still frequently perform the death penalty are China, Iran, Saudi Arabia,Iraq ,United States, Pakistan , Yemen, Korea (North), Vietnam, and Libya.

Answer to my questions

What is the difference between corporal punishment and capital punishment?

The word ‘corporal punishment’ comes from the Latin word meaning body. On the other hand, ‘capital punishment’ comes from the Latin word the head.

Corporal punishment is a type of physical punishment and it includes flogging, canning, mutilation, and branding. It is not only apply to criminals but to all offenders because it varies to a mild one to a harsh one. It could be applied to a child, to a prisoner, and to anyone who offensive.

Capital punishment is to execute to punish someone for committing a very serious crime. It can only be applied by a proper legal trial. So there are some countries that capital punishment does not exist.

Answer to my questions.

Is it hypocritical?

I think it is very controversy issue so I do not say what I say is the correct answer because it differs on one’s perspective.

However, I searched about it and found that about 70% says it is and 30% says it is not. This is a web questioner result. According to what I found, it seems that it is thought to be hypocritical in general.

Answer to my second question

Is the death penalty cheaper than keeping the criminal alive?

I only searched about japan because japan is well known for good treatments in prison.

All the expense needed in prison is paid with taxes and a criminal need about 1310 yen per day on average, including clothes and medical expenses. However, it does not include payment for the guards nor other expenses needed to put them in prison and to keep them in prison. In addition, they actually get paid per hour, about 4215 yen on average a month per a criminal. This is all supplied by taxes.

It is true in prisons, criminals have to work and it’s a very hard work that they are told to do in the prison, they still get good treatment.

On the other hand, condemned criminals do not have to work at all and get a single room. They get the same treatment as the other criminals and wait for the day of execution to come. The Japanese government does not publish how much it needs to perform execution. Though there are some researches about it based on what the government stated and looking at what American government is publishing about death penalty.

However, it seems that execution cost is very high. It’s higher than keeping one criminal that is to be imprisoned for life.

Answer to my first question.

Is death penalty not only applied to murderers but also rapists and thieves?

In Japan.

Death penalty is of course applied to murder.

Rapists do not get death penalty unless they kill the person on purpose.

If they didn't kill the victim on purpose ( such a case when the victim suicide ) they do not get death penalty, the worst punishment they get is imprisonment for life.

If the victim didn’t even get hurt physically, they only get 3 years to 30 years in prison.

About thieves.

If the thief hurt the victim, he (or she) gets lifelong or more than 6 years in prison.

If the victim is murdered, he (or she) gets death penalty or imprisonment for life.

point of view from an executioner from mid-centry in Europe

I am an executioner in mid-century in Europe. My work is to kill criminals. It is one of the biggest entertainment for the people so we executioner do it as cruelly as we can. There are people who think it is very cruel and prefer not to watch the execution but a lot of people come and watch the execution as they don't have much entertainment in their lives normally. We do it cruelly, one reason is that it is an entertainment, another reason is to restrain people to commit crimes. However, people watched the execution as an entertainment, we executioner were discriminated badly. We were not allowed to marry a normal woman, our children had to hide their parents job or otherwise they get withdraw from school, and we were thought to be a murderer who is having fun killing criminals. It is because we keep straight face while we kill criminals in a very cruel way and have direct contact with criminals so they think we are affected and are polluted by the criminals so they do not want us near them. Though we are just diligently doing our duty. Our job goes on from generation to generation so we teach our children the job and our children would take place after we retire. As there are no executions every day, we usually have a side job and a many of executioner do a surgeon as a side job. We do various executions so we know where the vital spot is and know the contracture of human body so we do very good as a surgeon. When we retire, we do surgeon as main job, too.

Executioners are not always good at execution. There are some executioner who are bad at using knives that when they perform decapitation, they cannot cut criminal’s head by one try. The rumor spreads so I try to do it nicely. If an executioner is good, they may be called to a royal family to do execution.

However, we are just bound to do our duty. That’s all.

A mothers perspective

I have written in Vicki Schieber's voice and perspective who is a mother who lost her daughter due to murder. I used factual imformation from the article
www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/new-voice-mother-shares-grief-and-joins-call-mercy

My name is Vicki Schieber. I know what it is like to loose someone you love. In 1998 May 7th, my daughter, Shannon, was raped and murdered. She was a gorgeous young lady who was just fineshing her first year of graduate school on a full scholarship at the Warton  School at The University of Pennsylvania. Every year, I cannot help but be reminded how she had such high hopes for the future.
Although I do grieve over the loss of my beautiful girl, I wish that the murderer, TerranceWilliams is not executed.

The first several years, my husbad and I were so very depressed and angry that we did not know how, or if it was even mentally possible to get on with our lives, but when working as an advocate for other people who have also lost their loved ones due to violence and crime to help get through the pain and grief , I was enlightened on the fact that some of the lucky people find a way to forgive and completely let go of  any terrible, hurtful and aggrivating thing that may have happened in the past.

The core reason why my husband and I wish to spare the life of Terrance Williams is because of our Catholic religeon. According to the Bible, it says to "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." Wich means, we are commanded by God to forgive anything or anyone who wronged us, just like how God forgives us of our sins. I believe in this verse, so the least I can do is to ask to spare the life of Terranance Williams

When my husband and I conjunted our request, the public wondered of we would win as well as the district attorney who was very worried for our emotional health.

Because of my catholic religeon, I have fully forgiven the man who killed my daughter, so my only wish and desire is that the public, district attorney and the government realize and respect my wishes to keep Terrance Williams alive.
