How often does the death penalty occure?

When coming up with this question i new that it was a very vaque question which has its pros and cons, pro because i can get alot of information on one topic, and con because i realized how often im going to have to cite all the sites im going to be researching on.
Because this is such a vaque question i decided to research how much it is occured in the United States just to get an estimate.
I also found this question extremely difficult to answer because of the numbers and percentage of the death row inmates by state, execution by region, as well as mental disabilities. So i decided to write about the number of death sentences per year from 1999 to the year 2014 in the United Sates. Looking at the graph you could see that the numbers slowly decrease from 226 to 73.
What i thought was the most interesting was how there were many death sentences in the year 1997 (226 ), and in the year 1998 there were 295 death sentences, but in 1999 it suddenly dropped to 279.
