Answer to my question7

What countries abolished the death penalty?

Before we started this project on contraversial issues I never new that Japan still performed the death penalty so when researching what countries abolished the death penalty, I was honestly shocked to find out that Japan was not on the list. But on a brighter note, it is good to know that no more than 10 executions have taken place.

According to this site http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/abolitionist-and-retentionist-countries the countries that have abolished the death penalty since 1976 are,
Portugal, Denmark, Luxembourg,Nicaragua, Noraway, Brazil, Fiji , Paru,
France, Cape Verde,Netherlands, Cyprus, El Salvador, Argentina, Australia, Haiti, Liechtenstien, German Democratic Republic, Cambodia, New Zealand, Romania, Slovania,
Italy, Belgium, Andorra, Croatia, Czech and Slovak Federal Republic, Hungary, Ireland, Mozambique, Namibia, Sao Tome and Princip,
Angola, Paraguay,Switzerland, Hong Kong, Guinea, Greece,
 and many MANY more!

  1. I'm not surprised that you weren't aware that the death penalty is still carried out in Japan. It doesn't seem to get much news coverage and people here don't seem to care about the issue. Few people advocate on the behalf of death row prisoners except when there has been a big miscarriage of justice.

The only time I saw the issue openly discussed in a public place in Japan was during "Earth Day" at Yoyogi Park at a stall operated by Amnesty International Japan. The organizers, asked passersby to put a magnet on a board next to "For" or "Against" the death penalty. Not surprisingly in that sort of setting, people representing the "Against" side were more numerous.
